Concept of TERESA project

This page summarises the results of the simulation models for the optimisation of rainwater and groundwater management in Astana, Kazakhstan. The scope of the simulations is to assess the efficiency of Sustainable Urban Drainage systems (SUDS) and their impact on the urban water cycle.

Multi-scale modelling results

The impact of SUDS was simulated at multiple scales using different simulation approaches to assess the reduction of surface runoff and potential storage in the underlying aquifers

A. Pilot area

Modelling the local impact of sustainable urban drainage systems

B. Taldykol area

Modelling the role of Taldykol lakes in the urban hydrological cycle

C. Yesil area

Modelling the groundwater flow conditions in the Yesil district of Astana
The impact of sustainable urban drainage systems was modelled at three different scales: a) small pilot area, b) larger area that includes urban lakes and wetlands, and c) city district scale

Simulation software

Different software solutions were used and further developed in the project to simulate water urban balance, flood water levels , and groundwater piezometric levels under the influence of various SUDS scenarios and climate projections
